DHS Scholarship and Fellowship Program

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in an effort to strengthen the United States' science and technology community in battling terrorism and achieving other objectives, is offering the DHS Scholarship and Fellowship Program to college students and graduates. This program is intended for students interested in pursuing innovations of science and technology that can be applied to the DHS mission. Some areas of study include: physical, mathematical, computer and information, life and social sciences, psychology, selected humanities, and engineering.

Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is offering a new scholarship, the Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship, for undergraduate students. Awardees receive $8,000 of assistance per year during their junior and senior years. Also, a 10-week, paid internship will be required during the summer between the junior and senior year. This program targets applicants who are willing to pursue a public service career with the NOAA or other governmental natural resource and science agencies.

Fulbright Program

The Fulbright Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, provided over $250,000,000 in 2004 to promote education and research in countries around the world. The Fulbright program is the largest U.S. international exchange program, offering about six thousand grants annually to both U.S. and foreign students, teachers, and researchers. Graduating seniors, graduates, and young professionals who are thinking of studying abroad are encouraged to apply.

George J. Mitchell Scholarship

The George J. Mitchell Scholarships, named in honor of the former Senator's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, are intended to familiarize and engage the next generation of America's leaders with the island of Ireland. These scholarships allow Americans to pursue one year of post-graduate study in any discipline offeered at institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The US-Ireland Alliance sponsors this prestigious, competitive, national scholarship to enable American citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 to study at universities on the island of Ireland.

The Harry Truman Scholarship is a prestigious award given to as many as 85 junior level students nationally. It awards $30,000 for graduate studies based on academic achievement, a record of leadership, and a future commitment to public service.

The Marshall Scholarship is awarded to as many as 40 students for two years of study at one of many British universities. It is also valued at $40,000 to $60,000 and is for graduate studies. The selection criterion is similar to that of the Rhodes.

Morris K. Udall Scholarship

The Morris K. Udall Scholarship is a $5,000 a year undergraduate scholarship for sophomores and juniors who are interested in pursuing a career in environmental public policy OR who are Native Americans or Alaska Natives who are interested in health care or tribal policy. They will consider the student's field of study, career objectives, and the extent to which that individual has the commitment and potential to make a significant contribution to his or her field.

National Science Foundation

The National Science Foundation funds a graduate research fellowship program that awards approximately one thousand $40,000 fellowships to support graduate study. The support lasts three years, and awardees are expected to work towards research-based master's or doctoral degrees. These fellowships are intended for students in the early stages of their graduate study.

Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Scholarship

The Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Scholarship is an award for Phi Kappa Phi members entering a graduate program. The scholarship grants 50 Fellowships worth $7,000 each and 30 Awards of Excellence for $1,000 each annually. The selection is based on the applicant's academic achievement and test scores, promise of success in graduate studies, leadership experience, letters of recommendation, and expression of study and career goals.

Rhodes Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship provides $40,000 to $60,000 for two years of study at Oxford University in England. Thirty-two scholarships are awarded nationally each year. The Rhodes is a post-baccalaureate program based on superior academic achievement, intellectual initiative, creative and aggressive thinking, and the potential for future leadership.
