Presidential Scholars

Welcome to the Shackouls Honors College and to Mississippi State's Presidential Scholars Program.

Presidential Scholars are selected each year from hundreds of applicants whose remarkable achievements in high school and in the community, combined with their motivation to be an agent of change after college, qualify them for the University's most prestigious award.

Presidential Scholars are expected to be leaders on campus and to seek out opportunities for intellectual and professional growth beyond the University. As Mentor to the Presidential Scholars, I look forward to working with students whose aspirations are to compete for the nation's most prestigious national scholarships. National scholarships and fellowships are most often available to juniors and seniors and help fund a significant research, educational or professional experience. In my role as Mentor, I am committed to assisting students to compete for these prestigious awards. The application process for prestigious fellowships such as the Rhodes, Truman, Marshall, and Goldwater encourages student development and is often a prelude to applications to the nation's most competitive graduate programs.

In the past, Presidential Scholars have won Truman, Udall, Mitchell, and Goldwater Scholarships and consistently earn challenging professional internships. As part of their scholarship, Presidential Scholars have the opportunity to study abroad in our Shackouls Summer Study at Oxford Program or to participate in other travel that enriches their educational experience.

Our Presidential Scholars include a student body president, an Olympic-medalist in space modeling competition, interns in Washington, D.C., graduate students at universities such as Stanford, Vanderbilt, and Georgia Tech, and they are doctors and leaders in business and education. Though the Presidential Scholars have varied intellectual passions and pursue many different academic disciplines, they have intellectual curiosity in common and think beyond the disciplinary boundaries that define the traditional university student.

I look forward to welcoming you to the Shackouls Honors College and to the prestigious group of Presidential Scholars at Mississippi State University.
